Arctic Monkey-Business Outside Barlows
5 September 2006
ALREADY a leading star in the interior solutions business, Sheffield-based Barlows has found itself branching-out into the music industry with an unexpected appearance in the latest Arctic Monkeys’ video.
Following some ‘monkey business’ by a film crew outside Barlows’ head office, last month, staff were delighted to see their place of work providing the backdrop for a scene in the Sheffield band’s latest video.
Lee Walker, managing director of Barlows, says: “It’s quite surreal to see where you work everyday suddenly appear on television. It’s a great claim to fame for us to be in the video because they’re the biggest band in Britain at the moment - especially after winning the 2006 Mercury Music Prize.
“The fact that the band chooses to film videos in their hometown is great. Sheffield is getting a lot of positive exposure on the back of the Arctic Monkeys’ massive success and it’s fantastic when you see our city in the spotlight.”
The video is produced by Sheffield company Warp X Films - who did the Scummy Man Films - and accompanies the band’s latest single, ‘Leave before the lights come on’. Directed by John Hardwick, the mini-movie stars Paddy Considine and Kate Ashford in a clever story about meeting people in a rather unconventional way.
Barlows is one of the UK’s most successful interior solution specialists and has been based in Sheffield for more than 130 years. In this time the company has forged longstanding relationships with some of the biggest names on the high street – including Marks & Spencer, Arcadia and Sainsbury’s.
Focusing on managing the entire lifecycle of a project, Barlows employs lean operating principles to give clients a 50% reduction in store downtime. By taking control of design, contracting, product solutions and support services (the company keeps its client’s doors open for longer, increases turnover and reduces inconvenience). Barlows’ focus is to open stores quicker thus increasing client’s turnover and reducing consumer inconvenience.
