Barlows Flies High With BAA

Following the completion of a £6.7 million project at BAA’s Terminal 5, Barlows, a leading specialist in Airport desking solutions, is now looking into projects at airports across the UK and Worldwide.

The three-year project at BAA’s new Terminal 5 was completed in March 2008.  The project at T5 was to develop designs, manufacture and install over 800 different types of airport desks including; gate desks, ticket presentation podiums, seated and standing service desks, and two types of check-in desks, as well as various other bespoke solutions throughout the airport.

Barlows project managed the manufacture and installation of all the check-in areas at T5.  A mixture of check-in desk designs were utilised to ensure maximise passenger flow efficiency.

This included a large number of self-service check-in desks in addition to the traditional style, integrated desking set against the back wall of the terminal.  A series of enclosed, manned check-in desks, featuring specialist bombproof baggage hoods were also installed into the impressive new terminal building.  The extensive number of self-service check-in desks in T5 will allow the terminal to manage higher levels of passenger footfall whilst providing a quicker service to travellers.

During the project, Barlows was awarded a ‘BAA High 5 Award’ for recognition of the consistent high standards provided during the contract.  The successful delivery of this £6.7 million project has raised Barlows profile as a leading airport desking supplier.

Following the success of the project, Barlows is continuing to work at Heathrow on other projects including Terminal 3 check-in desks and Pier 7 gate room boarding desks, Terminal 4 check-in desks and Central Search podiums, and Security Standardisation ticket presentation desks in Terminals 1,2,3 and 4.

Lee Walker, managing director of Barlows, commented: “It was exciting being part of a team working on one the largest construction sites in Europe.  BAA has been a long standing customer of ours and following the success of the T5 project we continue to work with them in other areas at Heathrow Airport.”
